World AIDS Day: Shifting Policies in South Africa and the U.S.

The Health Blog normally ignores disease awareness days, weeks and months as pseudo-events designed to drum up media coverage. But a few nuggets pegged to this year’s World AIDS Day (today) seem noteworthy:

South Africa will provide free treatment for all HIV-positive infants under age 1 and expand treatment for others including HIV-positive pregnant women, President Jacob Zuma said. The announcement is significant not only because South Africa has the world’s largest population of HIV-positive people (5.7 million), but also because Zuma’s predecessor repeatedly denied that there was a link between HIV and AIDS. Maternal HAART Minimizes The Risk Of Postnatal HIV Transmission

Researchers conducting clinical trials in Rwanda have concluded that the risk of postnatal transmission is minimal in HIV-positive mothers undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) while breastfeeding. Eric Goosby, head of PEPFAR, on Wednesday reemphasized the U.S. commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS globally, the Associated Press reports. Despite concerns by international aid groups that the current economic climate might force HIV/AIDS funding to be scaled back, “Goosby said President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have assured him his program remains among ‘the highest priorities,’” the news service writes.

InterMune’s Lung Drug Gets Backing From FDA Panel

Another day, another stock-price jump.
First, the preliminaries: An advisory panel this afternoon recommended the FDA approve a lung drug developed by InterMune, with majorities of the outside experts saying the proposed treatment appeared effective and safe.
The FDA is expected to decide by early May whether to go along with the panel’s recommendation on pirfenidone, which is intended to treat patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The FDA usually follows the lead of its advisory committees.
This all comes as good news for investors in InterMune, whose shares streaked nearly 60% higher Friday because the questions posed by the FDA staff for today’s… Continue reading

Vets Welcome Extension To UK Pet Travel Protection

The European Parliament has voted 618 votes to 17 for an extension to the transitional arrangements contained within the regulation on the non-commercial movement of pet animals (Reg. 998/2003) which afford the UK additional protection against rabies, ticks and tapeworms.
