World AIDS Day: Shifting Policies in South Africa and the U.S.

December 2, 2009 Health News No Comments

The Health Blog normally ignores disease awareness days, weeks and months as pseudo-events designed to drum up media coverage. But a few nuggets pegged to this year’s World AIDS Day (today) seem noteworthy:

South Africa will provide free treatment for all HIV-positive infants under age 1 and expand treatment for others including HIV-positive pregnant women, President Jacob Zuma said. The announcement is significant not only because South Africa has the world’s largest population of HIV-positive people (5.7 million), but also because Zuma’s predecessor repeatedly denied that there was a link between HIV and AIDS. The U.S. said it would… Continue reading

Eric Goosby, head of PEPFAR, on Wednesday reemphasized the U.S. commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS globally, the Associated Press reports. Despite concerns by international aid groups that the current economic climate might force HIV/AIDS funding to be scaled back, “Goosby said President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have assured him his program remains among ‘the highest priorities,’” the news service writes.

Goosby’s comments came during a telephone interview from Washington, where he “also described a new era of cooperation with South Africa, the nation that bears the greatest AIDS burden” and is also “the… Continue reading

Wall Street Journal: “‘When the people of my state elected me in January, they sent more than a senator to Washington–they sent a message,’ The Massachusetts Republican said in the weekly Republican address. Brown castigates Democrats for focusing on health care over jobs and the economy for the past year and that the focus has been a ‘bitter, destructive, and endless… Continue reading

Hemorrhoid and Pregnancy

March 14, 2010

Because of the pressure exerted by the growing fetus on the hemorrhoidal veins, pregnant women are highly susceptible to developing hemorrhoids. Increased levels of the female sex hormones can also weaken vein walls to make them more prone to hemorrhoids. Furthermore, constipation due to poor diet and insufficient exercise can also aggravate hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

For some women, hemorrhoids can also develop during labor due to intense pushing. For others, complications after delivery can also lead to hemorrhoids. For example, vaginal and perianal tenderness may cause some women to postpone bowel movements, which leads to constipation and hemorrhoids.

I am a newbie when it comes to natural products. Should I buy organic? Natural? What is the difference between them? Lucky me, I spent time talking walking the aisles of the “Natural Products Expo West” in Anaheim, California Friday. I went in armed with extra info provided from my interview earlier in the day with Maria Rodale, author of “Organic Manifesto,” a sort of bible for organic living.
I got up to speed quickly on how to size up an organic product – and saw firsthand how many different choices there… Continue reading
