In Stanford Study Mathematical Innovation Turns Blood Draw Into Information Gold Mine

March 8, 2010 Health News No Comments

Scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine have devised a software algorithm that could enable a common laboratory device to virtually separate a whole-blood sample into its different cell types and detect medically important gene-activity changes specific to any one of those cell types. In a study to be published online March 7 in Nature Methods, the scientists reported that they had successfully used the new technique to pinpoint changes in one cell type that flagged the likelihood of kidney-transplant recipients rejecting their new organs…

Challenging The Theory Of Single Stem Cell For Blood Components

March 6, 2010 Health News No Comments

Components of the blood or hematopoietic system derive from stem cell subtypes rather than one single stem cell that gives rise to all the different kinds of blood cells equally, said scientists from Baylor College of Medicine in a report that appears in the current issue of the journal Cell Stem Cell (http://www.cell.com/cell-stem-cell/) “While previous reports in journals have hinted at the possibility of stem cell subtypes, this study represents the clearest data to show that is true,” said Dr. Margaret Goodell, director of the Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine (STaR) Center at BCM…

Breakthrough Reveals Blood Vessel Cells Are Key To Growing Unlimited Amounts Of Adult Stem Cells

March 5, 2010 Health News No Comments

In a leap toward making stem cell therapy widely available, researchers at the Ansary Stem Cell Institute at Weill Cornell Medical College have discovered that endothelial cells, the most basic building blocks of the vascular system, produce growth factors that can grow copious amounts of adult stem cells and their progeny over the course of weeks. Until now, adult stem cell cultures would die within four or five days despite best efforts to grow them. “This is groundbreaking research with potential application for regeneration of organs and inhibition of cancer cell growth,” said Dr…

Senators To FDA: Lift Ban On Gays Donating Blood

March 5, 2010 Health News No Comments

The Associated Press: ”The time has come to change a policy that imposes a lifetime ban on donating blood for any man who has had gay sex since 1977, 18 senators said Thursday. … The lawmakers stressed that the science has changed dramatically since the ban was established in 1983 at the advent of the HIV-AIDS crisis. Today donated blood must undergo two different, highly accurate tests that make the risk of tainted blood entering the blood supply virtually zero, they said.”"The FDA, in a statement, said that ’while FDA appreciates concerns about perceived discrimination, our decision to maintain the deferral policy… Continue reading

How Blood Drives Motivate Blood Donation

March 3, 2010 Health News No Comments
